Formation of World Black History Month Greatness on Periscope

Black history month brings out an air of pushing past any boundaries that keep you from being successful. With the reflection of great individuals from our past, we begin to channel their greatness in our right. There are individuals that are spawning a resurrection to Black greatness and it is happening with the formation of World Black History on Periscope one broadcast at a time.

On February 6, 2016, Black history was made once again, when World Black History on Periscope (@WrldBlkHistPeri) hosted the 1st Black History Month Pass the Scope. It was an all-day event that ran from 12pm EST to….some say around 8:30 pm but this train ran well into the midnight hour with a DJ that knew how to rock the party right, but I’ll get back to him.

@WrldBlkHistPeri was created by Janice Temple, a Chicago travel guide with the mission to provide Black History for Teachers who love to travel. Janice put out a Call to Action on the group’s FaceBook page and broadcasters answered the call. The day rolled on with great scopes that ranged from the story behind the newly invented Black History Periscope Emoji to a private tour of the preserved Slave Quarters at Ben Lomond Historic Site in Manassas, VA to a trip to Africa. The black excellence was over-flowing with a group of individuals that took personal pride and energy inFormation World Black History spotlighting Black history and achievement. What made the day for me is that every one of the broadcasters is currently becoming part of their own Black history.

Each broadcaster brings to the table a multitude of talent, expertise, charisma, business sense, and power. For instance, there was Ruben Arana; a Professor of Theatre Set Design at Florida A&M University who gave a passionate presentation on how his ancestor’s originated in Sierra Leone, Africa then were shipped to Jamaica and eventually settled in the small town of Bluefields located in Central America where he was born. We also were treated to healthy soul food cooking by Cassandra Herbert, a nurse psychotherapist, nutritional wellness coach and the owner of Just BEE Wellness. Then when it came to talent, we were blown away by the likes of the lovely sInger Lydia Harrell with her jazzy vocals, The Voice’s Azania Noah who channeled Ella Fitzgerald, and Nyoka Lowery-Bey gave the audience a mini blues concert.

There was a special message from Naomi Osemedua the creator of #AfricaThruMyEyes who connected to all the viewers from the motherland of Africa and inspired all to leave their footprint in history. Then the night was closed out by the amazing DJ’ing styles of Mario Armstrong a TV host, the founder of Never Settle Club, digital lifestyle expert, entrepreneur and on-air contributor for NBC’s TODAY Show, CNN and NPR. He capped the night off with music to energize and uplift.

For me it was a day in Black history that will forever inspire me to strive for nothing less than excellence. We originated from greatness, through adversity we were not broken, and to greatness we shall return. Continue to be part of a TrueMovement.
